It's always a little nerve-racking to buy a new car model. When it comes to buying a car with new technology, the stakes are even higher. But, for buyers of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle, there should be some piece of mind.
Kicking Tires writes, "When it finally goes on sale at the end of the year, Chevy’s extended-range electric Volt will come with a fully transferable eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty on its battery."
"GM says that because of its extensive testing on the Chevy Volt’s battery, completing more than 1 million miles and 4 million hours of validation testing since 2007, the automaker can stand behind the Volt’s battery with the longest warranty available on any electric or hybrid vehicle on the market," explains Left Lane News.
With a full charge, the Volt will be able to travel up to 40 miles on electric power alone. After that, a gasoline engine kicks in to recharge the battery. With most drivers covering less than 40 miles per day, in practice, the Volt's operation could be gasoline-free.
The battery warranty isn't the only thing putting the Volt in the news. While Chevrolet had said the Volt would get an EPA-estimated 230 miles per gallon, it no longer appears to be the case.
"GM says its previous forecast of 230 miles per gallon for the Chevy Volt electric car is dead," says USA Today. "It was calculated using a government formula that never got final approval and the feds are working on a new one."
Autoblog writes, "Don't expect a revised mileage figure any time soon. In fact, an actual mpg-equivalent rating may not come until the Volt is just about ready to hit the market at the end of the year." They also point out "Considering that nothing quite like the Chevy Volt has ever been levied upon an unsuspecting American population, we may not truly have any idea what kind of mileage the average person will be able to achieve with the extended-range electric vehicle anyway."
